Situation

Timor-Leste’s colonial past has limited educational and economic opportunities, especially for women and girls. While there has been progress, patriarchal norms remain and rural areas like Hatobuilico continue to lack resources, infrastructure, and employment. Most rural families rely on subsistence farming and cannot afford university costs. Women's groups in Hatobuilico work to reduce poverty and develop skills but still face barriers to economic independence and civic engagement.

Objectives

This project improves access to education and supports economic empowerment through two main initiatives:

University Scholarships: Four-year scholarships covering fees and living costs are awarded to disadvantaged young women in Timor-Leste and students from Hatobuilico, based on financial need and academic promise.

Support for Women’s Groups: Informal women’s groups in Hatobuilico receive mentorship and development aid to enhance skills, promote economic independence, and encourage civic participation.

J1072N helps young women complete their studies and graduate, increasing their employability, financial independence, and ability to support their families and communities.
