Protecting the Vulnerable: Preventing Gender Based Violence
Violence against women and girls is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world. Gender-based violence (GBV) undermines the health, dignity, security and autonomy of its victims. Many Global Development Group projects are working to prevent GBV through programs providing refuge, medical care, economic assistance, education and empowerment.
Our partner, SNEHA, previously trained women to identify, refer and intervene in cases of GBV in their communities. These women are known as ‘Sanginis’ or community women volunteers and they form the backbone of the GDG Project J1118N Community Stewardship and Action Against Gender- Based Violence. These experienced volunteers are leading 130 women’s groups that meet to find solutions against incidents of GBV in their community.
The project provides counselling and crisis intervention services for survivors, community mobilisation and institutional responses.
